Yes, we have a greater intelligence, and we've adapted to life in a different way than other species have, which I think is why people think we're supposed to have some sort of path or 'purpose', but the fact is we just don't. As humans we think too much, we over think things until the point of believing in something that doesn't exist.
We have no path or destiny to fulfill, we're just living breathing things. Like everything else, we're born, we live, we die. We exist, we've existed.

I have somewhat of a similar belief. For me it's more like, I think that as a species we've forgotten what our true purpose is and who we really are. Reading David Abram's 'Becoming Animal' helped me see this more clearly.
