The problem with YouTube in particular is that it's largely self moderated. People up vote and down vote comments. Which means terrible things that some people find funny get shot right to the top. And even if people down vote it- it just gets hidden not deleted.

Personally, if someone is trolling in a thread I create I try to deal with them calmly and rationally. But that doesn't accomplish much when their goal is to hurt you and I must admit it does bite quite deep. As if humans haven't created enough horrible things & misery in this world. . .
