I think that this thread is more applicable to Western society in general, rather than simply the public libraries. I visit my public library all of the time!

I have noticed, however, that people are much more focused upon their little gadgets than anything else as they walk down the street, wait in cars, stand in line/s, etc. All fussing with a "Smartphone" of some type, they appear to be completely removed from the present moment.
