My therapy is mostly talking, psychodynamic therapy. I also did a lot of writing for a while and still do some. For a time my T did EMDR with me as well.
EMDR did help with some of my extreme panic and flashbacks. We didn't do very much EMDR because I don't think that I was a great candidate for it. For me I don't know if it worked the way it was "supposed" to work, with all the technical stuff. It seemed to me that the method and eye movement was mostly helpful as a way to get out of my own way essentially. It seemed that by following T's finger I was distracted enough that I could let some of my walls drop and get out of my head a bit and just allow what I had to deal with come up. Without the EMDR I was a frozen, panicked mess and could barely speak about anything at all. The interesting thing is that after doing the EMDR a number of times and having T help ground me and deal with the issues I brought up, I was able to engage in "talk therapy" much more effectively and we haven't even discussed EMDR in years. So, I feel that this method really helped me tremendously, but more as a way of occupying part of my attention in order to allow me to connect with T and get past some of my defenses.
Thanks for this!
