It sounds like a dissociative state of mind. (Simple daydreaming is a form of dissociation.) You are not being totally present to your life. I suspect there is something about your life that you are trying to escape. Maybe some trauma happened to you . . . perhaps a long time ago. Or maybe some real important emotional need you had was not met. It sounds like you have kind of given up on expecting much good from life, so you have kind of tuned out.
I think you are very correct to think that the "forgetting" is meaningful. It indicates something. It might be good to figure out what.
