There's no harm in asking I think. Sometimes wording them are a bit tricky because you don't want to seem too freaked out.
Maybe say something like "Hi X, I just wanted to send you a quick note thanking you for meeting with me last week. I'm very excited about this opportunity and please let me know if you need any additional information from me regarding this position. I hope you had a great weekend and I look forward to hearing from you."
I've sent quite a few of these. And typically, as in 90% of the time, I will get SOME kind of response. Feel free to be more direct in the email... I'm just extremely passive aggressive.
