You do not need to compensate for being messy. I am extremely messy. After a lot of struggle, I have learned to see that it is a wonderful quality that means that you are not too controlling, for one, and are delightfully spontaneous, for another. Celebrate it. For real. And, do not invite people over if you know them to be the ones who criticize you for being messy. Just eliminate such people from your life.
