I find it hard to express myself and talk to people if I'm in this state. I mean, it's like I'm not even me. I'm not the most active or happy person going, but when I'm like this it's like I just switch off for a time. For example, I was at a party at the weekend and I apparently quietly got up off the sofa and went in the kitchen, sitting in a corner staring in to space.

The hell?

These periods are becoming more frequent. I've found myself in the toilet at work just sitting staring into space after a stressful phone call.

What you describe can be caused by stress alone. If you have a therapist share your experience with him/her. If you don't have a therapist it might be a good idea to find one. Everyone needs someone to talk to and sometimes we can't talk to our family or friends about what is going on in our head. A therapist is a good place to start.
