I don't have credit cards anymore, since I filed for bankruptcy last year. I've found a great solution in a "Virtual Visa" debit card, that I got from my bank. It's kind of a pseudo credit card designed to be used on-line or over the phone, but it takes the money straight from your bank account. It won't work in stores, but it's great for on-line shopping, I also use it as my "credit card" with paypal. I try to use Paypal for as much as possible, but for sites that don't take paypal, I use my virtual visa. I'd say it works most places. About 1% of the site's I've tried to use it on, recognize that it's not a real credit card somehow, and won't take it, but McKafe took it no problem.
I agree not having a credit card is a pain, but it is possible to manage without one.
