The variation in the shape and size of female breasts (which are, unlike vaginas, publicly visible even when clothed) is probably a closer analogy. I think that from that standpoint, men have it easier these days - they do have insecurities, but they do not have to face those insecurities just by walking down the street - the penis is not publicly visible.
