One thing that seems to be emphasized over and over in my classes (working on a master's degree in mental health counseling) is that people may have a diagnoses, but people are not that diagnosis. So you have ADHD, but don't let it have you, ok? You may have challenges and some difficulties, but there is a lot more to you than that. Don't let your challenges define you.
Compare with medical diagnoses. Do people say "I am cancer?" They might say I am sick or I am diabetic. Those are adjectives though. We might say I am depressed or I am hyper, too. But if you put it that way it tends less to sound like that is a major defining characteristic.
