I don't like SUV's (whose invention led to the demise of station wagons.) I don't like sitting so high up. Those things always feel to me like they could tip over easy.
If you get a sedan, know that 4 door cars can take side impact better than 2 door cars. Also V-6's are safer in a jam than V-4's, like if you have to accelerate quickly to get out of a tight spot.

I agree regarding wagons, below is a pic of mine I took a couple of years ago:
With the seats down it can carry up to 60 cubic feet of cargo. with back seat passengers in tow I still have a 34 cubic ft trunk, I bought in part to help with my little hobby of gardening. I find SUVs to be cumbersome and clumsy.
This puppy has a 2.0 Turbocharged 4 combined with a DSG transmission which has terrific punch off the line (especially with the transmission in sport mode) and effortless highway performance.
With 2 passengers on board, the back full of luggage and plants, the AC on, averaging 75MPh on a trip to SC I averaged 32 MPG, not bad at all.
Sadly VW now only sells its successor in Europe. My next vehicle will likely be a small crossover of some sort, as the only midsize wagons left are made by BMW and Mercedes, way out of my price range.
