Having a Dr. suture up your wounds is much safer, so you made the right decision. There are probably some cuts that are obviously self inflicted, but accidents can produce some pretty odd looking lacerations. I think I have a story for every scar!
Most ERs are too busy for the Dr.s to stop and try and evaluate whether the wound(s) were accidental or self inflicted. Despite that, its always a good idea to tell the truth anyway so you can get the psychiatric help you need as well. No matter how bad you think what you have done looks, the Dr.s have seen worse.
At the risk of being offensive, this is an odd anecdotal story I heard while going through practical nursing school (never took the exam, I liked animals better). The teachers were telling us some of the strangest injuries, and some were self inflicted. One man had taken the the center of a pen (the part with the ink), and inserted it all the way up his urethra. Eventually it became infected and spread to the testicles. By the time he got into the hospital, they had to remove one testicle and barely saved the penis. So, next time you feel embarrassed because you cut yourself, keep in mind that though the Dr.s are probably sympathetic, they have seen much stranger behavior.
Cutting is a symptom of emotional pain, and you really don't need to feel embarrassed. Some people pull out their hair, others bite their nails past the quick. The important thing is that you get the help you need so that you don't hurt either physically or emotionally anymore.
