I have researched the topic and drawn the conclusion that people
create fake identities on the Internet for many reasons:

1) On some sites, people might be just playing a practical joke. They might just get a kick out of fooling others.

2) Sometimes people might be very self-conscious about perceived deficiencies and so create a more attractive face and life for themselves. They could even be ashamed of who they really are.

3) Some people are unable to deal with real-life relationships, so they establish fantasy relationships on the Internet.

4) Some people just want to escape reality and live a different life. In some cases they might even be trying out different personas, such as a man pretending to be a woman.

5) Some people might fear identity theft or abuse, so they falsify details to give themselves more confidence and less fear.

6) And, yes, there are a few people who create false identities because of psychopathological reasons. They might even be truly cruel and like to hurt other people. However, these kinds of people are relatively rare.
