Bipolar can change over time. Some patients, myself included, get upgraded to BP 1 from BP-NOS or BP 2 due to a defining event that meets the DSM criteria for a manic or mixed episode.
It's funny, I obsessed over having a 'number' for a year, and then when I finally got assigned one it was no big deal. The diagnostic label is really only for billing purposes, anyway (I get charged more now than I did when I was BP-NOS because my case is considered 'complex'). Try not to get too hung up on whether you have 1 or 2, your doctor is treating the
symptoms and not the diagnosis.
