Lol! That was a funny response. I'm not sure why people think its their business. I had a patient at work with healed but distinct scars (words had been cut in the skin so there was no disguising how they got there). I didn't say a thing at all. I didn't think it was my business. That wasn't his purpose for coming, and he was already noticeably embarrassed that i'd have to see the part of his body they were on to do my job in the first place.
Most of my scars are fairly new. So I haven't had that problem yet (heaven forbid the day I do). BUT I do have one old scar from the first time I cut. I was on a study abroad trip and one of the other students asked where the scar came from. I told her I had so many scars (from eczema, falls, unintentional self destructive behavior) that I really couldn't pin point where it came from. Instead of dropping the issue, she asked in a mocking/playful tone: "Did you use to be a cutter?!" I just laughed and rolled my eyes, but I really was speechless.
