In my thirties it looked like my sex life was going to have some regularity after all, but then I hit a major draught, so I know a person can go years and years in unelected celibacy without being in solitary confinement in a jail. Women tend to think there's something wrong with celibate men so there's a snowball effect the longer it lasts.
