Hi. I would just be honest with you doctor about the degree of your anxiety...and you're curious if a medication like xanax will work. The worst thing he can say is no. I started on xanax in december as needed. My doctor has been open about it...and knows I do not abuse it. We just keep the communication lines open. I take 0.5mgs as needed. Good luck!
