I guess I mean that he came between me and my parents in a protective way. My family refused family therapy but eventually my mom came in for a few sessions--when she got abusive he gave her the verbal smack down. Even when your family doesn't go to therapy, you can grant permission to your therapist to talk to your parents--sometimes they are so ****ed they don't realize the damage they are doing.
