From what I understand, bipolar CAN run in families, but that doesn't mean it will. Like cancer, it is more likely that someone can get cancer if there are relatives who've had it--but just because someone has it, doesnt mean that you'll get it; on the other hand, someone can still get it if there is no family history of it.
