I'm pretty sure the gene mutation that generally causes bipolar can also cause ADHD, depression, and schizophrenia, so if anyone in your family has those, it also increases your risk for bipolar. And I'm pretty sure it is heritable because if an identical twin has bipolar, the chance of the other twin having it goes up by 65% or something like that.
