I think with family you can't explain; they refuse to understand even if they could. My way about it all is to have my own plans. If they assume I'm doing something with family, for example, and it conflicts with something else I want to do (stay in bed? go to movies?) I just tell them I can't, I have other plans (sit in car and think of another plan?) family can be so demanding for no good reason a'tall! (Of course, I'm never invited to anything when family does come down...but anywho.)
