I'm sorry but I struggle here a bit and just don't quite understand you...
Why on earth did you arrange a dinner with her if it's going to be that tough and you don't seem to want it?
Also, being a toddler is not an excuse for abusing puppies. As an owner, it is your responsibility to prevent it and explain to your friend that she must control her child. Those puppies, if hurt by a child at such a sensitive age can actually develop behaviour issues and become dangerous to children later, which is - we all know - probably a death sentence for a dog.
Hands on heart, I don't mean to upset or challenge you and I mean all this in the nicest possible way, actually hoping to be helpful.
