It could also depend on the season. Mouse troubles tend to escalate in colder months (they too want to get out of the weather). However, if the mouse scat is new, in an area that you have seen many times and not just discovered under a box you haven't moved in ages, then its a problem. Mice do run around the edges of things, so try to place the edge of the traps flush to the walls.
