At the hospital, Sonny sat beside Joel holding his hand and stroking it tenderly with his thumb and commented that their twitters must be going haywire, but Joel said nothing, staring blankly into space. He regarded the picture of bunnies on the wall, the small flat screen TV, and the open window where the pink light of the evening sky seeped through as the typical boring hospital room. He then looked at Joel’s heart tattoo and caught his breath. How could his tattoo change like that, and why? Is Joel dying? Sonny offered to turn on the television with no response. He then stroked Joel’s cheek and whispered his name soothingly.

“It’s okay, Joel. We’re going to be fine. It’ll be okay.” They sat there in silence, the occasional beeping from the monitors and the ticking of the clock being the only exception. Sonny cupped Joel’s face and smiled for the first time in days.

“Hey,” he whispered, “I love you.” Sonny pressed his lips against his companion’s, savoring his firm lips. As quickly as it had started, he pulled back and smiled as Joel gazed up at him still expressionless and speechless, but Sonny knew he had brought him back to the present.
