I know how you feel I'm 54 and I'm diagnosed with bipolar too but I've only been manic when on antidepressants now that I quite taking them I've not had any more mania. According to the book one shouldn't be diagnosed bipolar from drug induced mania. But I'm still stuck with the label, and I feel like I get treated with fear when people hear the label.
