I like to fall back on the idea that praise is best left to the other person. In other words, praise for yourself tends to be gratuitous self plugging. Praise from another person about you is not only more credit-worthy, it just plain feels better if your own opinion of yourself is kept in check and every once in awhile someone else might think you're great and say so.
Now to only make the rest of the world understand this o.O
