What are you studying? Is there a group
activity/club you could get involved in that would be interactive without being overwhelming? What is available. Any chance you might take the chance of sitting with someone? Bet if you look around you either "know" someone, or someone else is alone and you could ask to join them...scary but hey...
(I like the gym idea)
