I try to look at bipolar as having 2 different meanings:
1. Real: Mental illness
2. Popular: Very rapid changes when referring to anything including mood
I tend not to take offence to these things because I feel people use definition two. No amount of education will take this word out of popular culture because English is an ever evolving language.
