I think a good aid to helping you sleep is some regular chamomile tea. It has helped me and isn't really strong. If you really want to get into the herbal scene you may want to consult a holistic therapist. They also look at your nutritional habits from what I hear. To be sure though the herbs are drugs, too, and some can even be bad for the liver. I heard kava kava and valerian root are not to be used long term as they can harm the liver. Those 2 are for anxiety and sleep. I would also try to look into therapies that don't involve any substances as an ideal way to go since you seem to be steering away from meds. Consulting a psychologist may be helpful in that way. Good luck to you.
