Hello night owls, night crawlers and vampires. I am nocturnal too. I have been working on a night shift for about 4 years. I hate it. I didn't do it by choice, it was (and still is) the only available position (because nobody else wants to do it). It is scientifically proven that being up during the night consistently is bad for your health. Just look at how many people work during the daytime. There is a reason why most people do. Sunlight naturally keeps us awake because we get melatonin. I know that my health is suffering from this work schedule but there is nothing I can do about it. I am consistently being sleep deprived, I get 4-6 hours a day tops, sometimes less. Then I end up sleeping for an entire day (yes 24 hours) on the weekend (if I don't have to work, which is rare). Also, every single person (there aren't many of us here, just 10 of us now) I work with is constantly asking each other "How much sleep did you get" "Was your sleep ok" and I'm hearing "an hour and a half", "not very much sleep" "I took a nap but couldn't get to sleep after that" often. Also, some people on the day shift (the day walkers, as they are called on third shift) that had previously worked the night shift say they had to switch to the day shift because they kept doing things like losing sleep, flipping schedules on the weekends, missing time with friends/spouses/family, the list goes on and on about various problems. Sorry for the bad news for those of you who like the night. Maybe you can deal with it better than others, but I know it does make an effect.
