You know for me I usually try and wear a nice shirt and slacks, etc., but then I "frame" it in my default hoodie/Chuck Taylor combo. And that's fine, except it feels so...blahh sometimes. I've done that for years. It's like I don't feel particularly handsome if I'm doing something by default. So for me that extra step you're talking about might be in the shoes and jacket combo. I guess sometimes the anxiety/self-esteem stuff gets in the way and I over-think color combos and other silly things like does the belt match, etc. But yeah, it definitely helps me feel better if I dress up a bit.
