The more grounded your spirituality is in reality, the better the foundation is, and thus the true character of the God will come out and be obvious to you. For me right now, just having God being there to listen to me, and know he is in control - that way I can be honest with him, and get out what needs to come out.
I think it's stronger than anti-depressants, and this calmness probably releases chemicals the brain needs. That's my own take on it, though.
All I know is guilt, fear and insecurity are human things everyone deals with and suffers from. We need a REAL way to handle these problems. That involves a real living God and as a result a real spirituality.
