I don't think it's silly at all! It sounds like a horrible experience. My T and I were talking about "bravery" like that and emergencies and how one is able to deal with them but then can fall apart when it's "safe" afterwards.
Do you have any "dog parks" in London, anywhere you can take your dog for fun, make it an outing for you, your dog and daughter (take a box lunch/snack perhaps)?

http://www.dogshome.org/ Maybe they can help both of you together? You could take a class with your dog, the two of you bond again and be confident with one another. Maybe call them and see if they can meet with you and just listen to you and your story; maybe you just need a sympathetic ear that's "there" and knows what you are going through and can help somehow. Or call animal control and have someone come talk to you, tell you what's happening so you know and any "worst" can be over?
