I find in William Jame's Varieties of Religious Experience an excellent perspective on those experiences within the study of psychology and neurology, but also to include a distinct spiritual nexus within those experiences. Writing in the early part of the Twentieth Century, his work is no longer protected by copyright and can be read free at the Project Gutenberg website. I recommend it highly.
