I work at a mental health clinic and our policy is that if the provider can do the paperwork during the session, there is no charge. If the provider must do it outside of session, then there is a $25 charge. The latter is a huge bargain, because it can take a long time to do the paperwork. Usually the therapists' schedules are so full, that if they do it outside of session, this would be during their uncompensated time before or after work. The therapist does not get that $25, the clinic does. Seems kind of unfair--the therapist works extra time and gets no benefit! I think the $25 is just to make clients think twice and try to do it in session, because that fee does not cover the time spent at all. To avoid the paperwork problem, I know that some Ts ask at the outset of the appointment, "do you have paperwork today?" because clients often whip out their paperwork at the very end of the session instead of asking at the beginning.
