Please make sure you reach out to the available counseling in the military. I know the Army debriefs their members for a month or so in Kuwait before allowing them home.

I wonder if the soldier either keeps it together in front of others while there, or perhaps the comraderie helps them do that...and when they are home it becomes too strong without the demand for adherence?

I can't believe the year is over for him already! That went so fast (imo) of course, not to the soldier.
