Everyone in my family is on lamictal none of us have had (hypo)mania because of lamictal. How it was explained to us is:
Everyone has a normal baseline, some have a high baseline (think of the bubbly people), and some baselines lay in a low level depression. Lamictal is suppose to help the second category. That doesn't mean an AD is not required to bring a person to a more normal baseline.
