I haven't been the one 'peeking out', having another alter in control, but there has been times where I've been in control but with another alter at the same time, if that makes sense? Like, knowing that the thoughts and feelings aren't my own, and doing things I wouldn't do if it was just me in charge... so I've been very affected by other alters being fronting too, but it has never been that I've lost control completely (as far as I know).
Even though I haven't been having another alter in charge completely I can really relate to what you're describing, about 'the weirdest feeling'.
