i know hindsight is a wonderful thing... but i wonder if you could have diffused the situation by jokingly saying 'why? are you trying to marry me off?' or something like that.

i don't know. maybe he thinks you would progress in leaps and bounds if you had more social support... but sometimes one needs to make a little progress before one can obtain more social support.

can be a bit of a cycle.
