Yes, you are right. It is in our head. Our brain to be exact. When we have depression, it's because we are chemically imbalanced.
I, too have fought depression since I was 14. I am now 52. I have had severe depression for most of my life. I am now on two different ant-depressants and I can't tell you what a difference it makes.
Before, I would turn off the phone, close the curtains and lock the doors. I stayed in bed most of the time. I didn't want to see anyone or talk to anyone. Not even my family.
Now, I am so much better. I have hope again.
I do hope that you continue with your anti-depressants and remember, that sometimes, they don't work or quit working and you have to try a different one. So, if you start taking them again and don't feel a change in your outlook, then it's time for a change.
