I definitely agree with beloiseau! Overcoming any form of addiction is never easy and it definitely should be praised.
I was recently at a conference where they were talking about SI and it really stuck with me. Most people who aren't harming also haven't experienced what you have - they haven't been in that level of pain. We all have different thresholds when it comes to managing pain and some naturally have a higher tolerance than others but self-injury is a way of trying to manage pain and suffering when all else fails. Any 'normal person' who was under extreme pressure and pain, and found that other coping mechanisms fail, could be drawn to self-injury to manage. It isn't a question of being normal, but of how much you have been through and managed to survive
