I've gotten the impression that it might also depend on what kind of therapy you're in. If I've understood it correctly CBT is more of a short-term kind of therapy while people in psychodynamic therapy are often in therapy for longer periods of time. Am I right?
Anyway, I'm doing CBT and I've been in therapy for about three months now. As far as I can tell I've made no progress and I wouldn't be surprised if I need to be in therapy for years.
