Employers can't overtly fire you, of course, because of your injury. But they can fire you by claiming your absence has become a detriment to the business. They just have to make a "reasonable" effort to accommodate you and hold your job until a doctor (yours or theirs) determines you can return to work. Of course, many who get injured can no longer perform their old job at an acceptable level to the employer and face retribution and eventual termination. In my case, their doctor claimed I could return to work 100% while my doctor still had me on a 25lb lifting restriction. I could go back to work and risk worse injury or listen to my doctor and lose my job. I really only had one choice.
