I am very sorry you are going through this very confusing situation. There must be something not right "mentally" going on because this situation is just not normal at all.
It may very well be that the father is telling the truth and really doesn't know much more then he is telling you. It sounds like there is already mental illness going on in that family with the way the mother is.

I am sorry, it is so normal to be wondering what is going on, cant blame you for that at all. It just may take some time before you are able to finally learn the truth.

I am glad you have your own family that is supportive right now. This could take some time to finally sort out and understand, the important thing is to do your best to remain calm and focus on self care and doing what you need to do for the health of your new little girl.
