I know that since you have a small child you might not be as able to do 'me-time' things...but what helps me is to have a nighttime routine. chamomile tea, relaxation techniques, a hot bath, soothing music, a slightly boring book...I've had insomnia for years. those things help but it's still a problem. after I tried sleep meds a few years ago it only made it worse in the longrun, so I understand why you don't want to take meds.
I have to have the tv on to sleep too! I know they say it's not helpful...but I strongly disagree.

I wake up twice as often and get half as much sleep if my room is peaceful and quiet.
