I am bp2 and I get more out of therapy than I do out of meds, to be honest. I've gotten so much better at being able to deal with my emotions and triggers, that the meds don't touch.
IMO, a meeting with a therapist once a week is ideal. For me it's like a check in and purge. The rest of the week is much smoother after I see her.
But find one that you like - mine was very focused in mindfulness and CBT, and that is working for me. Mine is also a social worker, so think outside the box. But be picky - you're not going to get anywhere with someone you're not motivated to see.
