I'm not sure how your kitchen is designed. But this is what I did in our kitchen. We have one door way. I put up a baby gate in this doorway. When I don't want my little Chihuahua in the kitchen I close the baby gate. She'll sit on the other side of the gate and watch me. This way she's not in my way and she's safe away from the hot stove. Maybe you could put up a baby gate. That way if you want the dog out of the kitchen when you're in there then you shut the gate. If you mother wants the dog in the kitchen then she can prop the gate open so the dog can enter in. Doing this will give both of you what you want. Good luck!
