It really depends on him and what you're willing and able to handle. I might ask him when he's stable if he's ever thought about talking to a psych. I probably wouldn't say "bipolar" at all, because it can set people on the defensive pretty quickly. I'd just point out that it doesn't seem like he's himself at all when he's gone on these breaks.
