I immediately suspected you were on CPP since you used to work. For people who don't qualify for CPP their only option is a provincially run disability support program. They get about half the amount CPP pays at least in Ontario.

In Ontario it takes months to get approved for the Ontario Disability Support Program. My friend had to wait 6 months. During that time he was on welfare and was barely making ends meet.

Doesn't Alberta have a disability program for people who have never paid into CPP?
